The Grindhouse crew have spent all winter toiling and shovelling their way through Iceland, Finland, France, and… err… Leeds?! to bring you their most ambitious film yet.

Mind Games is the name, legitimacy is the game, and from what we can see here they sure have come up with the goods.

You’ve got your stalwarts – Nuddsy, Smith, Dutton, Weatherley etc – and we see a welcome return from Si Foster and Jamie Nicholls, not to mention appearances from the legends who are JR and Thrashmore.

We were stoked to be able to contribute to this film in a small way by filming some UK spots with Jamie Nicholls, John Weatherley and Doug Johnson, and it looks like uber filmers Jamie Durham and Carter Hewitt have come up with some banging shots.

We just wish the autumn would hurry up and get here so we can see all this in its entirety. Top work from top lads!

Here we get a glimpse of what she’s been up to over the 2013 winter in Bear and Avoriaz.

Orla is all about the rail steeze and is always up for pushing on with bigger and more tech tricks, not letting little things such as injuries and massive slams distract her from the bigger picture. Translation: Orla has massive balls… though not literally, you understand.

She’s just arrived in Australia for the southern winter after a short recovery from a shoulder injury she picked up in Kaunertal. This is one determined lady no doubt about it. Look out world, the Doolinator is coming for you.

…And whoever put that edit together must be some sort of edit messiah genius wizard.

The Aviemore crew just pulled some sort of Jeremy Jones survival shit and went balls deeper, further,  faster, stronger AND HARDER, into the wild Highlands, as illustrated in the handy moving picture window above.

How sick does that ice boulder field look? Top work gents.

Mike’s Birthday Garden Shred happened by accident one year. It was Mike’s birthday and year he decided to throw a party. Add in some ghetto rails, a few trailers full of snow from nearby Cairngorm Mountain and the sketchiest homemade Poma tow we’ve ever seen and you’ve got yourself a legit party, Scotland style.

After seeing the video from last year’s event, and getting a pretty convincing invite from Angus Leith we decided it was about time we got some adventure in our lives and headed North beyond The Wall to Mordor, otherwise known as Aviemore, Scotland.

Now. Anyone would think that in May there would be no snow left and the temperature would be soaring as the spring blossoms bloomed. But this is the Scottish Highlands, and weather don’t make sense here. We headed deep into the Scotch Mist (which it turns out is actually a thing) in Mark Ruparelia’s monster truck, armed with shovels and a trailer to harvest what was left of the Cairngorm neige.

On return to Mike’s garden, said neige was heaved uphill by an army of enthusiastic volunteers and scattered about to form some sort of run in.

It pissed down. All day. We were wet. We were muddy. Our cameras were shielded by Tesco carrier bags, our spirits warmed by Scottish liquor and good cheer. This was The Garden Shred. It was AWESOME. Long live The Garden Shred.

Tamworth is once again the best fucking resort in the Milky Way so get your arses into domemode and get raucous for the summer shred.

Lewis and James from Super Rad – a snowboard coaching outfit with added RAD FACTOR – have been on to tell us about these summer camps they’re doing in Tignes this summer.

WHAT? SNOWBOARDING? IN SUMMER? WHAT?

For the uninitiated, Tignes is on a glacier, which is a pretty hefty chuck of ice. Which doesn’t melt. Much. So yeah, basically you can snowboard there in summer.

IS IT NICE IN SUMMER?

Lewis and James – whom we will henceforth refer to as “The Dudes” – have secured some pretty pimpin’ lakeside views at Lo Terrachu in Le Lac, the most central, eye catching part of Tignes, especially in the summer when the grass is green, the sun is out and good vibes are all around town. And that’s certified RAD.

WHAT HAPPENS ON A SUMMER CAMP?

What happens at summer camp stays at summer camp – y’hear? But seriously…

You’ll get expert coaching and guidance from The Dudes every single day in one of the best – and quietest – summer riding areas in Europe. There are jib runs, side hits and a legit park to kill yourself develop your skills in.

The Dudes will stamp on your bad habits, kick your arse, tell you to stop crying for your mammy and man up… OR develop you as a rider on and off the hill, aiming to develop the specific areas you want to work on.

Here’s the end of season edit from THE CHOSEN ONES AKA The GB Freestyle Snowboard Team, endlessly wandering the earth, tearing it a new shred hole and sayin “Yeah, we’re from the UK – what of it Jonny foreigner?!” Probably.

From the mind bending stomp-a-tron skills of Billy Morgan, to Jenny Jones‘ new rail shralping hype, this edit shows off how these guys have progressed over the season.

Rowan Coultas found his kicker overdrive button, as did Henry Shackleton. Sam Turnbull and Aimee Fuller are vying for a part in the next Superman movie, The halfpipe brothers Kilner and Harington are holding down the comp scene, whilst Nate Kern shows the Old Guard can still throw down, and Nicholls is just spinning and slaying everything in his path with his uber style that we know and love.

Oh, and *THAT* Katie Ormerod clip makes a welcome official appearance – you know – the nonchalant double backie.

Angus Leith is actually a high court judge, and Scott Penman drives old ladies to church and high tea.

In the end it came down to a five CHF toss-up between Yorkshire and Yorkshire in the form of Will Smith and Andy Nudds, with Nuddsy taking the win and capping off Smith’s official ‘Worst Night Ever’. (He’d just been robbed of a place in the November Knockout final by Simon Cudlip after a controversial decision by the MC’s)

Fast forward to April and it turns out they both get an invite to go shred with some of the most progressive jibbers on the planet – and they certainly held their own as can be witnessed in this superb video based presentation.

So good to see our boys doing so well. Stoked.

I mean park edits are pretty boring, right? Don’t you find you get through about 15 seconds and then zone out until the ender?

Well not this time, soldier! Why? Because this is the most exciting park edit you’ve ever seen. Bar none.

Why? Because the filmer/editor knows exactly what he’s doing, and the riders – in the shape of Sam Turnbull and Si Cudlip know how to throw a shape or two, that’s why.

I mean you very often see filmers using stabiliser rigs on the mountain, but you very rarely see them used for their actual purpose (stabilising a moving shot), or to their full potential for that matter.

This is actually a lot of fun to watch too – the doubles setups, the cutaways, the appropriate – and sparing – use of slow motion and the sheer size of some of the tricks all goes into creating a fun, engaging and meaningful edit.

This is just stunning. Our hearty congrats, high fives and maybe even a WOOP YEAH to all involved. Jon Moy is the dude behind the lens. Crackin’.

This one was the kind of storm that picks you up off the floor, gives you a couple of hefty slaps round the chops and says “OCH! PULL YER SOCKS UP MON! AND WHILE YER AT IT HAVE A WEE DRAM.” It was a perfect storm.

Not in the George Clooney sense, but rather lots of disparate positive elements coming together at one opportune moment to create a climax of conditions.

The last time Vans came to Cairngorm it was HOT. There was not much snow left, but what there was they managed to scrape into one HUMUNGOUS kicker, and everyone had a good time.

This time, just a week before, the weather had been truly generous and literally shat bucketloads all over the mountain. This provided the perfect opportunity for Chief park sculptor Adrian to get in his CAT and create the first ever legit looking park that Cairngorm had ever seen, under the expert guidance of Cairngorm Snowboard Club.

On the day, the sun came out and the wind dropped, as if to say “Hey Vans, look what I did for you – and hey kids – now you show them what we can do up here.”

We had 2 decent kickers and a rail plaza. We only really needed the first kicker, for VANS HI STANDARD was about big air and floaty style. No spins over 720 were counted, and this definitely brought out the best in those that came to ride.

Big air = big cash so the VANS dollars were flying out left, right and centre as people got creative and more daring with their grabs. Trinder and Malloch were all about the truckdrivers. Methods and Rodeos became pretty standard, as did the art of perfecting that elusive backside 180.

TSA’s Andrew Forwood stretched himself a new backbone with an insanely tweaked back scratcher, Matt McCormick continued his jaw dropping domination of everything, whilst Rio Peterson and Vaila Chapman held the girls’ end up.

But at the end of it all there was definitely one stand out winner.

He’s like a cat in that he always seems to somehow land on his feet after falling out of the sky in some ridiculous pose. He’s been around for what seems like forever, but he still consistently kills it whenever he shows up. The one, the only Danny McCormick.

The footage speaks for itself really – there were probably five times as many landed tricks than anyone else.

All in all a splendid affair and a top weekend. Props to VANS, Dragon, TSA and Cairngorm Snowboard Club for bringing the stoke to Scotland, and putting their hands in their pockets and rewarding cold, hard, cash. It’s what riders need, and provides the perfect incentive to throw down… not that they need much encouragement.

My resounding image from the weekend is that of Jamie Trinder emerging from the woods at 2am with his trousers round his ankles. Make of that what you will…

WBB take the art of creative editing to a whole new level – can’t actually wait to see EP 12!

The dudes take a trip to the Silverton backcountry with Dragon team members Gabe Taylor and our very own little Willy Smith. Yep. Smith’s sending it off cliffs now – he slays rocks as well as metal!

Contains nudity, japes and cock slapping. Perfect.

I’d all but forgotten about the Cavern 24/7 film competition after posting the winner up here last year, and it just so happened to be taking place again this year whilst I was out in Avoriaz for some much needed R&R.

For the uninitiated, The Cavern is a well-known bar in Morzine, France and a popular hangout for seasonaires and ex-pats alike. For the past six years they have been running their 24/7 film competition – continuing the legacy of the Red Bull Hike & Ride and Jib Vid for those that can remember them.

The concept is simple: Grab yourself a team of riders and filmers, come up with a zany story idea based around skiing or snowboarding, go out and film and edit it into a 4 minute film. You have seven days to come up with the goods.

So throughout the week I’d spy bizarre outfits and odd behaviour on the slopes, like bumping into Westbeach TM Sue Garlick in the supermarket dressed like Pamela Anderson off of Baywatch, or a gang of denim-clad riffers chasing down a startled tourist. ‘I bet that’s that Cavern thing’ I’d muse to my riding buddy. I was right.

So on the Thursday night we headed down to the bright lights and big city of Morzine, slightly trembling totally at ease with the fact that we had no way of getting back up the mountain at 2am. We were just Krayzee, footloose and fancy free.

The premiere screening was at the Palais des Sports – that’s French for ‘sports palace’ – didn’t look very opulent to me but there you go. Luckily there was cheap booze, a large screen and a raffle so nobody noticed – everybody loves a raffle.

A banked slalom intertwined with sick-arsed park features & some of the raddest snowboarders known to man. That’s basically it, and it looks like the best fookin fun you can have on a mountain.

Our boy Jamie Nicholls was in the mix, getting reunited with his film maker pal David Benedik, but it was Christian Haller who took the win, with Nicholls taking Best Hammer. Nice.

OFFICIALNESS:

WBB‘s Angus Leith and his mate Mike decided to have a birthday garden shred. In Scotland. In May!

The setup looks ridiculous with a full on multiple lines going on through the trees, with bits of Dendix to top up the snow run, s-rails, hips, spines, boxes – it’s all here. They even built their own fricking poma tow!

Incredible.

Whilst everyone else has been frolicking in the European neige like a bunch of sugar-riddled toddlers, Glaswegian die hards Angus Malloch, Rio Peterson and Marc ‘Gladis’ McClement have been sawing Snow Factor a new blow hole.

Filmed over two nights, the dome based trickery on display here is something to behold, like a perfect brew.

Malloch appears to have actually grown a snowboard from the end of his feet, Riona has finally stuck back boards like some sort of crazed Banshee and Gladis – well, Gladis just gone done the snowdome equivalent of breaking the sound barrier, chucking back seven trannies and back-three-on’s like it’s some sort of every day occurrence.

Annoying Tahoe all season long with his grating Welsh accent and his lank, hanging locks. Standard. Keep it up Rickers!

Apparently our Jimmy Shaggerty did some filming in it too, however he has since wiped away all recollection of this with copious clouds of Dutch courage.

In January James made a trip up to Cairngorm Mountain in Scotland to hang out with Jamie Trinder – a member of the GB Freestyle Snowboard team about to embark on his first winter season after finishing school.

Shot on a budget of nothing with a DSLR and a shit microphone (apologies), this film gives an insight into the unique lifestyle and snowboard scene way up there in the Highlands of Scotland.

We get to see how Jamie is supported by Snowsport Scotland and his mentors and coaches to give him the best chance of success on the road to the 2018 Olympics.

We see Cairngorm at its best, and its windiest (although that was probably nothing!) We hoon about the mountain with the crew including local legend Angus Leith, build a simple park, pump some weights and session a dry slope.

We hope you enjoy this film – we are aware it has flaws and is not technically perfect, but stick with it, we’d love to hear what you think and if you think there is scope for more of this type of film.
